Description

Bak Kut Teh is a popular Chinese pork bone soup dish that's often served with steamed rice. However, to spice things up, this recipe will show you how to make onion rice to go along with your bak kut teh. The fragrant aroma of the onions and the savory flavors of the soup make for a perfect combination.

Prep Time

15 minutes

Cook Time

30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of jasmine rice
  • 2 large onions, sliced thinly
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 cups of water

Equipment

  • Large pot with lid
  • Non-stick pan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Cutting board
  • Knife

Method

Step 1: Rinse the rice

Take the jasmine rice and rinse it in a fine mesh strainer until the water runs clear. This helps to remove any excess starch and ensures that the rice cooks evenly.

Step 2: Saute the onions and garlic

In a non-stick pan, heat up the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and minced garlic, and saute until the onions are translucent and fragrant.

Step 3: Cook the rice

In a large pot, add the rinsed rice, sauteed onions and garlic, salt, and water. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and let the rice simmer for 18-20 minutes.

Step 4: Let the rice rest

Once the rice is fully cooked, turn off the heat and let the rice rest for 10 minutes with the lid still on. This helps the rice to absorb any remaining liquid and become fluffier.

Step 5: Fluff the rice

After 10 minutes, remove the lid and fluff the rice with a wooden spoon. Serve hot with your bak kut teh soup.

Notes

  • For added flavor, you can also add some sliced scallions or chopped cilantro to the rice before serving.
  • If you don't have jasmine rice, you can also use basmati rice or any other long-grain rice.
  • Make sure to use a non-stick pan when sauteing the onions and garlic to prevent sticking and burning.
