Cook Time

The cook time for this recipe is approximately 2 hours.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef stew meat
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 4 cups cooked white rice

Equipment

  • Dutch oven or large pot
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon

Method

1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and black pepper. Add the beef stew meat and toss to coat. 2. Heat the olive oil in a Dutch oven or large pot over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. 3. Add the beef stew meat to the pot and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes. 4. Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, and bay leaf to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened. 5. Remove the bay leaf from the pot and discard. Serve the beef stew meat over a bed of cooked white rice.

Notes

You can add additional vegetables such as carrots, celery, and potatoes to the stew for extra flavor and nutrition. Simply chop them into bite-sized pieces and add them to the pot with the beef broth. If you want to thicken the stew even more, you can whisk together 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and stir it into the pot during the last 10 minutes of cooking.

Recipe Tips

For the best results, use a high-quality beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. You can also use homemade beef broth if you have it. To save time, you can use a slow cooker instead of a Dutch oven or large pot. Simply brown the beef stew meat and sauté the onions and garlic in a separate pan before adding them to the slow cooker with the rest of the ingredients. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.
