The ingredients you will need for this recipe are:- 1 cup Basmati rice
- 1 3/4 cups water
- 1 tbsp oil or ghee
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 2-3 green cardamom pods
- 1-2 cloves
- 1 small cinnamon stick
- 1/2 tsp salt
Equipment
You will need a medium-sized pot with a tight-fitting lid, a fine-mesh strainer, and a wooden spoon.Method
- Place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear. This will remove excess starch and prevent the rice from becoming sticky.
- In a medium-sized pot, heat the oil or ghee over medium-high heat. Add the cumin seeds, cardamom pods, cloves, and cinnamon stick and sauté for about 30 seconds, or until fragrant.
- Add the rinsed rice to the pot and stir to coat with the spices.
- Add the water and salt to the pot and bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and all the water has been absorbed.
- Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit for 5 minutes, then fluff the rice with a fork.
- Transfer the rice to a serving dish and serve hot.
Notes
- Do not stir the rice while it is cooking, as this can cause it to become sticky.
- If you prefer your rice to be less fluffy, reduce the amount of water by 1/4 cup.
- You can add chopped onions, garlic, and ginger to the pot before adding the spices for extra flavor.
