- 1/4 cup of sugar
- 1/2 cup of warm water
- 1/4 cup of vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup of cornstarch
- 1/4 cup of warm milk
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
Equipment
- Large mixing bowl
- Mixing spoon
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Steamer basket or bamboo steamer
- Parchment paper
Method
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the rice flour, active dry yeast, and sugar.
- Add the warm water and vegetable oil to the bowl and stir until well combined.
- Add the cornstarch, warm milk, salt, and baking powder to the bowl and stir until a sticky dough forms.
- Cover the bowl with a damp towel and let the dough rest for 1 hour in a warm, draft-free area.
- After 1 hour, the dough should have risen and be slightly sticky to the touch. Knead the dough for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and pliable.
- Divide the dough into 10-12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
- Flatten each ball into a disk shape with your hands, then use a rolling pin to roll out each disk into a circle about 3-4 inches in diameter.
- Place a small spoonful of your desired filling (such as pork, vegetables, or sweet red bean paste) in the center of each circle of dough.
- Pull the edges of the dough up and around the filling, pinching the dough together at the top to seal the bun.
- Place each bun on a small square of parchment paper and place in a steamer basket or bamboo steamer. Steam the buns for 15-20 minutes, or until the dough is cooked through and fluffy.
- Remove the buns from the steamer basket and serve hot.
